Appointments

We now operate a triage system to manage patient calls and requests. Although triage was initially implemented in response to Covid, it has proven to be very effective in dealing with the exceptionally high volume of patient requests we receive every day.

Pharmacy First

You can now go to a pharmacist for advice and treatment for some simple illnesses instead of going to your doctor. This is called the Pharmacy First scheme. Depending on your age, pharmacists can prescribe medication for the following problems:

  • Earache – 1 to 17 years
  • Impetigo – 1 year and over
  • Shingles – 18 years and over
  • Sinusitis – 18 years and over
  • Sore throat – 5 years and over
  • Uncomplicated Urinary tract infections – women 16-64 years
  • Infected insect bites – 1 year and over

Anyone not within these age ranges should contact their GP. Find more details about Pharmacy First here

Usually, you can just go to the closest pharmacy and ask for an appointment. Sometimes, you might hear about this service by calling 111, 999, or your GP. Pharmacists can help with lots of other problems too and tell you about medicines you can buy without needing a prescription.

Self Referrals

You may be able to directly refer yourself to the service you need without needing to see a GP.

A wide range of services are available without needing a referral from your GP.

See the Self-Referrals page

Request an Appointment

Our appointment system is designed to make sure we direct patients to the most appropriate person within our team.

You can submit requests for appointments via our online consultation form or by calling reception on 01865 762535 and asking them to complete the form on your behalf.

Your request will then be triaged by a GP and you will will either be contacted with details of an appointment, sent information about how to manage your problem, or you will be asked for further information.

Requests for Urgent Appointments

If you have a problem that you feel needs same day urgent treatment or review then you can phone the practice between 8.30am and 6pm.

We do not have a limit on urgent appointments, if you need to be seen urgently we will accommodate you, this may be with a phone call or face to face appointment at the Manor Surgery or at the City Urgent Care Centre (located next to the John Radcliffe Hospital). This means you do not need to phone at 8.30am, in fact we encourage you not to. Our phone lines are busiest between 8.30 and 10am and then become less busy after that.

Nursing Team Appointments

Our nursing team offer reviews of contraception, diabetes, asthma, COPD and cardiovascular disease. They also provide immunisations, health checks, blood tests, travel vaccinations and smear tests.

For long term condition reviews you will be recalled, usually in your month of birth.

To request an appointment please use the online form or call reception on 01865 762535

Other Appointments

You can make appointments directly for blood tests (if requested by a clinician), smear tests (if you have received a letter stating that you're eligible), health checks, immunisations and other appointments with our nursing team in any of the following ways:

We will send an appointment reminder by text to your mobile phone one day before your appointment.

Please note that appointments cannot be booked via email.

Sickness Certificates (Fit Notes)

You must give your employer a doctor's 'fit note' (sometimes called a 'sick note') if you've been ill for more than 7 days in a row and have taken sick leave. This includes non-working days, such as weekends and bank holidays.

Home Visits

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we appreciate that this is not always possible. If you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 11:00am. Home visits can be requested later in the day in an emergency.

You should only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP may ring you to assess your condition and the urgency of the visit. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls.

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.

Change or Cancel an Appointment

Please note, if you are late for your appointment and the doctor or practitioners clinic is full, you will be asked to book another appointment; you will only be seen at the end of the surgery in exceptional circumstances.

Please give us as much notice as possible so we can offer your appointment to someone else.

Please read our Did Not Attend (DNA) Policy

Ways to cancel

  1. Telephone us on 01865 762535.
  2. Patients who have opted into the text-messaging appointment reminder service are also able to cancel their appointments by replying to the text message.

Cancellations notified less than 30 minutes before the appointment time will be recorded as failure to attend (DNA).

Repeated failure to attend booked appointments is a significant waste of NHS resources and may lead to your registration being removed from our list.
